Foreword
The pioneers and past members of St. Andrews are remembered. Many friends have taken the opportunity of giving their contributions in commemoration of their own beloved dead.
Every organisation within the Church has co-operated with the special committee freely and generously - their names and membership therefore form part of the story.
The installation of the pipe organ within the sanctuary of St. Andrews provided the congregation with a most stimulating and refreshing spiritual experience.
Thanks therefore are rendered humbly to Almighty God who gave the inspiration and brought about the final accomplishment of the joyous task.
This book is the gift of the teachers and children of St. Andrews Presbyterian Sunday School - September 1954.
This book was handwritten by Mr. R. G. Pettett 1954.
The St. Andrews Congregation Footscray was formed on the fourteenth day of November 1861. The present bluestone church was erected in August 1885., the back wall of the building being left unfinished in the hope that those who came after' would add transepts , apse, choir, organ and vestries. As the time passed, to meet the pressing needs of its own vigorous life, the congregation commenced the building of adequate halls in preference to completing the church structure.
At the close of the 1939-45 World War however, the idea crystallised that a pipe organ within the Church would be an appropriate memorial to the pioneers and the men who made the Supreme Sacrifice in the First and Second World Wars. From the beginning a harmonium had done service for choir and congregation.
On May 10th 1943, after learning that her son had been killed in battle, and to perpetuate his memory, a bereaved mother, who is a member of the Church, gave a sum of money, on receipt of which, the Rev. R. W. Stephens introduced the idea,, which was approved by Session and Board, that the gift be held in trust as the commencement of a Fund for the purpose of providing a memorial in the form of a pipe organ to be erected within St. Andrews.
Later in that same year the choir members, stimulated by the idea, decided to contribute one-third of their own weekly collections to a "Pipe Organ Fund". Four years later they requested the Board and Session to set aside Anzac Sunday or remembrance Sunday for Pipe Organ collections. The choir, still intent on the purpose, received, in the year 1948, the consent of the Board and Session to a proposal for obtaining subscriptions, to be known as the St. Andrews Pipe Organ Fund Fellowship, the membership fee to be five shillings. This scheme was later organised and managed by the Organ Fund Committee. It was not until 1949 that a sub-committee of five from the Board of Management and three from the Choir were appointed to enquire from organ builders the type and cost of a suitable pipe organ for St. Anderws. The move arose out of a letter from the Choir to the Board of Management suggesting that some such action should be made.
The Committee numbered in its membership: Messrs. W. Sinton, R. Woods, W. G. Woods, B. G. R. Mc Arthur, K. Manley, J. C. Hicks and J. C. Miller, who, having met, proceeded to the task. Later they submitted a lengthy report on their researches with recommendations which were received and approved by the Board of Management, who thereupon resolved to submit report and resolutions through the Session to the Congregation. The Congregation met during October 1950 and unanimously approved that: "This Congregational Meeting of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church Footscray, Approve the purchase and authorise the installation of a Memorial Pipe Organ within the Church.
The specifications and cost for the erection of a suitable organ received from Messrs. Hill, Norman and Beard were approved. The price submitted was £3616.
The organ was described as a two manual organ with a three manual console as the most versatile and useful that the firm could devise.
In November of this same year a Pipe Organ Appeal Committee comprising two delegates from each organisation within the Church was formed. The Hon. Secretary, Mr. R. Woods, and the Hon. Treasurer, Mr. W. J. Woods - of the Board of Management being appointed ex officio to the Committee. The Committee duly met and has continued as the responsible group for the continuance of the Appeal.
The contract with Hill, Norman and Beard was signed on December 14th 1949.
The first action of the new representative Committee at their meeting in January 1950 was to define the purposes of the Fund. The decision they arrived at was approved by the Congregation that: " A Memorial Pipe Organ be erected within the Church to the memory of the pioneers and to the men who made the Supreme Sacrifice in World Wars I and II. The representatives of the first Committee included J. C. Miller, Convener, W. J. Woods, Hon. Treasurer, R. Woods, Hon. Secretary, Mrs. V. Samson, Asst. Secretary, Messrs. Jas. Woods, M. Greenway, V. Samson, A. Harding, W. Sinton, J. C. Hicks, K. Manley, H. Burnett, J. Mc Arthur; Mesdames G. Bell, W. Sinton, E. Wardell, Govan; Misses Shepherd, Hickox, Morrison and Chapman.
The Organ Fellowship scheme of collecting funds was organised by the issue of collection books to all willing helpers - under the charge of this new Committee.
At their meeting in July, a framed barometer, adorned with a sketch of the proposed organ pipes, was placed in the front entrance porch of the Church. This was designed to show the monthly progress of the Fund.
A money box was placed near the picture for the taking of casual collections.
From February 1951 until the end of that year, many functions were carried through successfully by individual Church groups. By this form of assistance and by personal giving the Fund grew substantially. The first straight-out appeal was authorised and organised successfully this year. It closed after three months. This scheme had the effect of making the appeal known to many friends of St. Andrews living at a distance.
The Church Fair, first of the series, earned the sum of £150. In the latter part of the year and the first part of the year following, the Fund built up steadily by the work of the Committee and by the enthusiastic co-operation of all the people.
The Second Fair to be held (1953) was more carefully organised, increasing the Fund by £270. Every organisation within the Church banded together loyally to make this united Church effort a success.
The pattern set down was followed in 1954 by an even greater success, the total income from this effort being £475.
Near Christmas time 1953, a Christmas Thanksgiving Appeal by letter was launched. Eight hundred people received the letter by post. It is worthy of note that the sum of £364 was subscribed by one hundred and fifty four people who replied. Again, as in the first straight-out appeal, all St. Andrews friends were told of the project, and as far as could be ascertained, the approximate date of the organ Dedication Services.
The consent of the Income Tax Commissioners was obtained, on the representations of the Committee, to allow contributions to the St. Andrews Footscray Memorial Pipe Organ Fund" as income tax deductions.
About this time the contract for the reconstruction of, and reinforcing of, the porch, for the purpose of supporting the organ pipe structure and the erection of the blower power house was let to Mr.P. Thomas, builder, who completed the job three months later, the price being £750.
In the month of June Mr. E. Davey undertook the fitting out of all the electric wiring connected with the erection of the organ. He did this as a free service to the Church. He was assisted voluntarily by Messrs. L. Stamp, C. Wright, and E. Andersen.
Alterations to existing Church furniture and fittings, for the better arrangement of organ sections, had to be made. The Honour Board has been altered to include a reference to the 'memorial' nature of the organ and to add the names of the 'fallen' in the war of 1939-45. Attached to the Board, a glass fronted case has been made to house the Book of Memory. Mr. A. Snaith undertook this work and completed at the same time the addition of a double fronted rail panel to the choir enclosure.
Alterations to the choir panel surround and the organ pipe casing was contracted to Messrs. Hadwen and Houghton at a cost of £339.
Mr. C. Wright reconstructed the choir staging which became necessary for the proper accommodation of the new organ console. A group of voluntary workers undertook to clean and repaint the porch, silence rooms and front doors of the Church. New fittings were added, and amplifiers were supplied to the Church and silence rooms.
A "Unit Contribution Scheme" was introduced for the quicker intake of money to provide immediate payments on the organ. The scheme arranged for the people to undertake, by promise, to pay a sum of money monthly over a period of twelve months. The monthly sum payable was the 'unit'. The scheme was directed by Mr. K. C. Clarke, assisted by Mr. R. G. Pettett and Mr. G. Bell who were appointed by the Board of Management to this responsibility. Many friends of St. Andrews have responded to the Appeal by giving money to named needs such as organ sections and other articles associated with the many new fixtures which the erection of the organ has made necessary.
A Book of Memory has been especially manufactured as an additional memorial. It contains detailed reference to all who worked voluntarily, to all who gave money for a specific purpose, to 'In Memoriam' gifts and all matters that have relationship to the cause of the Memorial Pipe Organ.
Mr. R. G. Pettett undertook the task of writing this mass of detail and of transcribing it by hand into the Book of Memory.
The console of the organ has been fitted into the choir enclosure behind the Communion area as the most convenient and appropriate place for organist and choir.
The organ builders delivered all organ sections for assembly at the Church on July 29th 1954.
Dedication, Memorial, Rally and Recital Services were held on Sundays, September 19th and 26th 1954, morning and evening, and on Wednesday September 22nd at 8 p.m.
The installation of the organ and all associated costs were financed by the free giving of the people of St. Andrews and the friends of the Congregation.
The material procured for this history was provided by the Hon. Treasurer, Mr. W. J. Woods, the Hon. Secretary, Mr. R. Woods, and Mr. J. C. Miller. It was collated by Rev. J. Mc Phail.
The final organ payment was made on February 1955.
